Summary

Illus。 in full color。
"Dr。 Seuss chronicles the feud between the Yooks and the Zooks from slingshots through sophisticated weaponry, until each side has the capacity to destroy the world。 The language amuses, the drawings are zesty and humorous, and the demand for this book will be large。"-- "School Library Journal。"

"Provocative, packs an allegorical punch。 The parade of increasingly elaborate (and ridiculous) armaments makes a telling point。"-- "Booklist。"

This is not my favorite Dr。 Seuss book。 Honestly, I would probably never read it if it wasn't for my library kiddos picking it out every March。 They always start of soo thrilled with the book, then by the end I can't tell what they're thinking。 I ask them what they thought of the book and I get either, "I liked it," or "It was okay。" It's fun to read but ends in a cliff hanger and the problem is never solved。 Plus, unlike with many other children's books, instead of reaching an agreement the two This is not my favorite Dr。 Seuss book。 Honestly, I would probably never read it if it wasn't for my library kiddos picking it out every March。 They always start of soo thrilled with the book, then by the end I can't tell what they're thinking。 I ask them what they thought of the book and I get either, "I liked it," or "It was okay。" It's fun to read but ends in a cliff hanger and the problem is never solved。 Plus, unlike with many other children's books, instead of reaching an agreement the two opposing sides are left arguing their opposing view points。 I think it would be much batter if the two sides learned to get alone despite their differences, however, that doesn't always happen in the real world and it doesn't happen in this book either。 。。。more

In remembering this book, my brain invented a conclusion out of whole cloth wherein the moral was explicated (i。e。 how silly to fight about butter, etc。) But it's just nuclear brinkmanship all the way down-- kind of unnerving as an adult tbh。 In remembering this book, my brain invented a conclusion out of whole cloth wherein the moral was explicated (i。e。 how silly to fight about butter, etc。) But it's just nuclear brinkmanship all the way down-- kind of unnerving as an adult tbh。 。。。more

I have no patience for these goofs who eat bread with the butter side up。

I really want to know who won, The Yooks or the Zooks, but other than that, a great book!

My personal favorite Dr。 Seuss book。

The conceit is hardly new--Seuss depicting a conflict over which side one should butter one's bread on is reminiscent of the Lilliputian conflict over which end of an egg to open--but Seuss's characteristic linguistic inventiveness and supple visual presentation makes this fairly overt commentary on the arms race and Mutually Assured Destruction amusing, despite its pretty grim (even by Dr Seuss standards, and some of his work can get pretty dark) thematic concerns。 Certainly not up there with t The conceit is hardly new--Seuss depicting a conflict over which side one should butter one's bread on is reminiscent of the Lilliputian conflict over which end of an egg to open--but Seuss's characteristic linguistic inventiveness and supple visual presentation makes this fairly overt commentary on the arms race and Mutually Assured Destruction amusing, despite its pretty grim (even by Dr Seuss standards, and some of his work can get pretty dark) thematic concerns。 Certainly not up there with the best of Seuss, but successful on its own terms。 。。。more

Another of my favorite books by Dr。 Seuss。 I read this book when I was younger and remember thinking how dumb it was to go to war over butter and bread and how its eaten。 When I read it again a few years ago I realized how dark it actually is while also discussing the truths about a pointless war (the Cold War。) I honestly find it amazing how he was able to incorporate a theme such as war into a children's book without making it too graphic。 Another of my favorite books by Dr。 Seuss。 I read this book when I was younger and remember thinking how dumb it was to go to war over butter and bread and how its eaten。 When I read it again a few years ago I realized how dark it actually is while also discussing the truths about a pointless war (the Cold War。) I honestly find it amazing how he was able to incorporate a theme such as war into a children's book without making it too graphic。 。。。more

When I read it as a kid, I thought it was stupid they were fighting and trying to make better and better weapons。 Little did I know at the time, that was precisely the point。 It is a brilliant critique of the nuclear arms race disguised as a children's book。 With the reason they are fighting being trivial and a bit reminiscent of the reason for the Lilliputian war from "Gulliver's Travels"。 When I read it as a kid, I thought it was stupid they were fighting and trying to make better and better weapons。 Little did I know at the time, that was precisely the point。 It is a brilliant critique of the nuclear arms race disguised as a children's book。 With the reason they are fighting being trivial and a bit reminiscent of the reason for the Lilliputian war from "Gulliver's Travels"。 。。。more

Nice complement to Divergent。 When we see others as separate from ourselves it doesn’t go well。 In trying to make them wrong, much time is wasted in defense and fear。 “Bad othering” vs bad behavior。

See, I remember reading this at school, and liking it, so I grabbed it at the library 30+ years later。 And it is a terrible choice for an anxious not-quite-4yo。 Quality parenting, self。

There is no such thing as a Dr。 Seuss book that I will not give 5 stars to。 That is because they all deserve it。 The picture book The Butter Battle Book is no exception。 The way the doctor shows us how silly and trivial war can be with the Zooks and the Yooks, it is so simple even a child can get it。 He also deftly conveys that feeling of tension associated with nuclear war at the end。 This book was written during the Cold War so the fear of someone "dropping the bomb" was much more common among There is no such thing as a Dr。 Seuss book that I will not give 5 stars to。 That is because they all deserve it。 The picture book The Butter Battle Book is no exception。 The way the doctor shows us how silly and trivial war can be with the Zooks and the Yooks, it is so simple even a child can get it。 He also deftly conveys that feeling of tension associated with nuclear war at the end。 This book was written during the Cold War so the fear of someone "dropping the bomb" was much more common among children and adults。 I don't know if this book would make that fear less or more in an individual but it would at least give someone like a child a safe place to examine their feelings。 We are not Yooks or Zooks, but no matter what we are I'm guessing that we all butter our bread from the top。 The book is not realistic。 The war is over something especially stupid。 That is what makes this book so great。 If children are not ready to tackle their fear of war and death they can stick to thinking about how they eat their toast, or the wacky looking characters with their even wackier looking weapons。 。。。more

I just wish we all have an understanding boss like that in our lives! The story portrays fueds between neighbouring areas for no action reason。 No fueds start with actual reasons though。 The war begins and this side in our story always loses。 But the one in command doesn't blame the one who's been out there and fighting。 Instead, he thinks of ways and means on how to improve the situation and actually helps the 'soldier'。 Several trials and errors but still there's hope the story tells。 I didn't I just wish we all have an understanding boss like that in our lives! The story portrays fueds between neighbouring areas for no action reason。 No fueds start with actual reasons though。 The war begins and this side in our story always loses。 But the one in command doesn't blame the one who's been out there and fighting。 Instead, he thinks of ways and means on how to improve the situation and actually helps the 'soldier'。 Several trials and errors but still there's hope the story tells。 I didn't like the ending though。 This one seems a bit incomplete。 。。。more

In this Dr。 Seuss book the people of Yook and the people of Zook are at odds because they don't agree on one small thing。 Their disagreement increases with more and greater weaponry introduced and no discussion。 The ending to this story is quite descriptive of our world。 In this Dr。 Seuss book the people of Yook and the people of Zook are at odds because they don't agree on one small thing。 Their disagreement increases with more and greater weaponry introduced and no discussion。 The ending to this story is quite descriptive of our world。 。。。more

Excellent story about the pointlessness of war and the downfall of one-upping your opponent。 The Yooks who butter their bread up and the Zooks who butter their bread down have been warring for decades when the grandfather Yook tries to explain the war and all the new weaponry created to try to force their neighbors to butter their bread on the "right" side。 Throughout the book, there are definitely some more complex themes and undertones that would be better suited to higher elementary school le Excellent story about the pointlessness of war and the downfall of one-upping your opponent。 The Yooks who butter their bread up and the Zooks who butter their bread down have been warring for decades when the grandfather Yook tries to explain the war and all the new weaponry created to try to force their neighbors to butter their bread on the "right" side。 Throughout the book, there are definitely some more complex themes and undertones that would be better suited to higher elementary school levels and not so much a beginner book。 。。。more

All Dr。 Seuss books are 5 stars for me。 Love his stories, his rhymes and his drawings and this one delivered all three。 He did, however, end his message in a way that I have mixed feelings about。 Good discussion book for all ages。

This book is certainly a different style than some of Dr。 Seuss's earlier books, an obvious social commentary on war and folly of what people argue over。 The book has the usual Seussian illustration style but there is a real undercurrent to this book。 The book ends with questions about what you would do。。。。a bomb on either side of the border。 Throw it or not? We, as adults, would be wise to examine our own ways of dealing with disagreement。 Excellent thought provoking book。 This book is certainly a different style than some of Dr。 Seuss's earlier books, an obvious social commentary on war and folly of what people argue over。 The book has the usual Seussian illustration style but there is a real undercurrent to this book。 The book ends with questions about what you would do。。。。a bomb on either side of the border。 Throw it or not? One of the few Dr。 Seuss books I didn't discover until high school。 We were discussing war and this was one way in which we took to analyzing and dissecting the basis of it。 I had not read it during my childhood, but my childhood was the kind for which this book was exactly written。 Hampered with the threat of imminent danger stemming from the arms race in general, but particularly the planet-ending threat of nuclear war。 It was nearly a given that it would happen—the question was when。So, no ma One of the few Dr。 Seuss books I didn't discover until high school。 We were discussing war and this was one way in which we took to analyzing and dissecting the basis of it。 I had not read it during my childhood, but my childhood was the kind for which this book was exactly written。 Hampered with the threat of imminent danger stemming from the arms race in general, but particularly the planet-ending threat of nuclear war。 It was nearly a given that it would happen—the question was when。So, no matter the age that I discovered this—I would've been 5 or 6 when it was first published—even first hearing it ten years later, the threat still loomed large in my thoughts。 It had fizzled out a bit more by then: the Soviet Union break up did a lot for that simmering down。 But then other countries would join in, their threat new, improved, and deadly。 The Butter Battle Book feels every bit like it was written by a person who was fed up with the constant threat of destruction, threats made by either side。 You could see the problem in both sides。。。the amping up in response, and the hesitancy to be the first side to relent。 We had painted ourselves into a corner, and global threat in general had amped up over that century。。。two world wars among it all, and the worry of a third, more deadly, more costly。And yet, the rhyming pattern, the human-like creatures who are the Yooks and the Zooks, and the simplistic point of contention between them: the side on which their bread is buttered, all make for an easy way to begin that discussion of peace and hope for the future with your child。。。1980s or not。 。。。more
